Tips for Answering Multiple Choice Questions in GATE & CSIR NET
Read the directions carefully
Know if each question has one or more correct option
Know if you are penalized for guessing
Know how much time is allowed (this governs your strategy)
Preview the test
Read through the test quickly and answer the easiest questions first
Mark those you think you know in some way that is appropriate
Read through the test a second time and answer more difficult questions
You may pick up cues for answers from the first reading, or become more comfortable in the testing situation
If time allows, review both questions and answers
It is possible you mis-read questions the first time
Answering options
Improve your odds, think critically:
Cover the options, read the stem, and try to answer
Select the option that most closely matches your answer
Read the stem with each option
Treat each option as a true-false question, and choose the "most true"
Strategies to answer difficult questions:
Eliminate options you know to be incorrect
If allowed, mark words or alternatives in questions that eliminate the option
Give each option of a question the "true-false test:"
This may reduce your selection to the best answer
Question options that grammatically don't fit with the stem
Question options that are totally unfamiliar to you
Question options that contain negative or absolute words.
Try substituting a qualified term for the absolute one, like frequently for always; or typical for every to see if you can eliminate it
"All of the above:"
If you know two of three options seem correct, "all of the above" is a strong possibility
Number answers:
toss out the high and low and consider the middle range numbers
"Look alike options"
probably one is correct; choose the best but eliminate choices that mean basically the same thing, and thus cancel each other out
Double negatives:
Create the equivalent positive statement and consider
Echo options:
If two options are opposite each other, chances are one of them is correct
Favour options that contain qualifiers
The result is longer, more inclusive items that better fill the role of the answer
If two alternatives seem correct, compare them for differences, then refer to the stem to find your best answer
Guessing:
Always guess when there is no penalty
for guessing or you can eliminate options
Don't guess if you are penalized for guessing and if you have no basis for your choice
Use hints from questions you know to answer questions you do not.
Change your first answers when you are sure of the correction, or other cues in the test cue you to change.
Remember that you are looking for the best answer not only a correct one, and not one which must be true all of the time, in all cases, and without exceptionM I B S I T B T

Gonorrhea Acquires Human DNA
Gonorrhea Acquires Human DNA
Bacteria have been known to swap and acquire DNA from other bacteria, which increases biodiversity that can be beneficial for survival. However, what was previously thought impossible has been proven false. New research from Northwestern University has found a piece of human DNA in the genome of Neisseria gonorrhoeae, the bacteria that causes the human sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea. This is the first time that a direct transfer of genetic material from human to bacteria has ever been recorded. This finding reveals clues to how the bacteria has adapted so well to survival among humans. Gonorrhea is a disease that is exclusive to humans and is transmitted via sexual contact. Each year approximately 50 million people worldwide become infected with the disease. The U.S. sees about 700,000 cases annually. Treatment is available by way of antibiotics. However, because of the ability of the bacteria to change and adapt, it has now developed resistance to the majority of antibiotics. Scientists are now interested in finding out what the bacteria is doing with their newly acquired human DNA. [via Medical News Today]

FDA Approves Gastric Banding For More Americans
FDA Approves Gastric Banding For More Americans
The FDA has just lowered the body mass index (BMI) threshold for people considering gastric banding. The LAP-BAND procedure is now approved for people with a BMI between 30 and 40, which accounts for approximately 37 million Americans. Previously, the LAP-BAND was only approved for those with a BMI of 40 and over, and those with a BMI of 35 with at least one other serious obesity-related condition, such as heart disease, uncontrolled blood pressure and diabetes. The minimally-invasive procedure is used in people who are unable to lose weight, despite diet, exercise and diet drugs. Over the past 18 years, more than 650,000 LAP-BAND procedures have been performed.

Fwd: Lavender Can Be An Effective Antifungal
Lavender Can Be An Effective Antifungal
Lavender has purported antimicrobial properties and is used in alternative medicine on a variety of skin conditions, including infections, burns, cuts, acne, hair loss and general inflammation. Now, new research published in the Journal of Medical Microbiology demonstrate its antifungal properties. Lavender oil was found to be lethal to a range of fungal strains that often cause skin infections such as ringworm, thrush and athlete's foot. The essential oils distilled from the Lavandula genus of lavender plants were able to destroy fungi by damaging their cell membranes. The exact mechanism of how it does this is still under investigation. Furthermore, this research has yet to be translated onto human subjects, so don't stock up on your essential oils quite just yet.

61-year-old US woman delivers her own grandson!
Kristine Casey became the oldest women in living memory to give birth in Illinois and also broke several local records for being the surrogate mother for her daughter, Sara Connell, who had been trying for years to have a baby.
Connell and her husband, Bill, are the biological parents of the child Casey carried, which grew from an embryo created from the Chicago couple's egg and sperm.
Connell told the Chicago Tribune that she and her mother held hands as Finnean Lee Connell was delivered by cesarean section at 9.47pm on Wednesday.

"When the baby let out a cry, I lost it. It's such a miracle," the Daily Mail quoted her as saying.
Susan Gerber, who delivered the baby at the Northwestern Memorial Hospital, said it would have needed a heart of stone to not be moved by the amazing event.
"The surgery itself was uncomplicated, and the emotional context of this delivery was so profound," Gerber said.
According to state health department records, the oldest woman to give birth in Illinois was 58 when she had her baby in 2006. (ANI)
