Tips for PhD Aspirants.

Do think about whether you really want to do a PhD. Being a PhD student is not the same as being an undergrad, nor like working as a research assistant. A PhD is extremely hard work requiring a lot of discipline and dedication.

Do choose your supervisor well. The quality of your supervisor will have a direct impact on how much you get out of your PhD and how good (or bad) an experience it is. Don't choose your PhD supervisor because he/she is the leader in his/her field, in fact that's the most likely way to find a bad supervisor. Talk to the PhD students already working in the lab, find out whether they are happy and get information about the supervisor's personality, level of attention (too much/too little?) and how well they plan their projects.

Don't leave the responsibility for your project to others. Don't leave it to your supervisor to tell you how to work, what to read or plan your project. This is your learning experience: Get involved and take responsibility as early as possible.

Do get support from other PhD students. When things get tough, the only people who can understand what you are going through are other PhD students (or former ones!). If there are other PhD students around you, arrange to go for regular coffee/lunch breaks with them. If not, try an online forum such as the Postgraduate Forum.

Don't waste your first year. It is easy to think that you have a long time to complete your PhD, but don't be lulled into a false sense of security… time has a habit of disappearing fast. Start out as you mean to go on. Establish a strict work and study routine, and stick to it.

Don't spend long hours in the lab for the sake of it. Make sure that when you are in the lab, you are working and not just hanging around. Many people spend 16 hours a day in the lab, but they only actually work for eight hours or less. An 8 hour day, with time away from the lab to relax your body and mind will keep you sharp and focused.

Do summarise your results as you go. From the beginning, get yourself into the discipline of writing a monthly summary of experiments performed, results andconclusions and include all lab book references/data/images. The monthly reports will link up to make a story of your research and make your write-up much easier.

Don't underestimate how long it will take to write up. However long you think it will take you to write up, double or even trebling it will be closer to the truth. The write-up is the hardest part of your whole PhD.
Do take every opportunity to practice and learn. Treat your PhD studies like an intensive training program. Listen to and learn from those around you, take every opportunity to try new techniques, present data, meet other scientists.

Most importantly… have fun…coz "All work and no play make Jack a dull boy."

Tips for Scientific Writing
Dear friends here are a few tips to be followed while writing projects, dissertations and research papers I hope that these tips will be beneficial to you.
Abbreviations:
 You should avoid abbreviations by writing out the full word (minimum, October, Virginia, first, temperature, with...).  Exceptions include common biological terms like ATP and DNA, units of measure (m, g, cm, °C), and mathematical or chemical formulas.  Sentences should never begin with an abbreviation or an acronym.

Acronyms
You may wish to introduce an acronym for a term that is repeated often:  if your paper deals with soybeans, Glycine max, you may use the full scientific name once and substitute G. max thereafter.  If you are writing a paper about tidal freshwater marshes, the first time the terms appear, you can introduce an acronym:  "Tidal freshwater marshes (TFM) are important transitional zones in the landscape."  Throughout the rest of your paper, you would refer to TFM.
Chemical elements are not proper nouns, so do not capitalize them.  Only the first letter of the symbol is a capital letter: nitrogen (N), carbon (C), calcium (Ca). 

Contractions
In formal writing, you should never use contractions (didn't, can't, haven't...).

Direct quotes
Direct quotes should be avoided, unless you are presenting another author's specific definition or original label.  You can usually paraphrase the writing effectively and more concisely, taking care to properly attribute the sources of your statements.

Read and re-read the References 
It is obvious when students do not understand what they are writing about, and their grades suffer as a result.  Read and re-read your references.  Consult a textbook or another reference to help you resolve any aspects of the paper you do not understand before you start writing.
Run-on sentences
You should review your writing to make sure that each sentence presents one or two clear ideas.  This will also help you organize sentences within paragraphs in a logical order.

Scientific names
Scientific names consisting of genus and species, should be underlined or italicized, with only the genus capitalized:  Homo sapiens or Ilex opaca.

Significance
In science, the word "significant" implies the result of a statistical test.  It cannot be used to say, "The number of root nodules on red clover plants increased significantly when nitrogen was added," if you did not perform a statistical test to determine significant differences.  You should analyze your results to determine whether they are statistically significant and report the test you used, the significance level (p=0.05), calculated statistic (tcalc), and degrees of freedom.

Slang 
Do not use slang.  Try to use precise, scientific terms where possible (without unnecessary jargon) and avoid colloquialisms and figures of speech: "somewhat" rather than "sort of," "many" or "a great deal" instead of "a lot."

Spell-check
Your word processor's spell-check and/or grammar-check function is not error-free.  It cannot tell you when to use "it's" and "its," and it cannot tell you that a particular sentence does not make sense.  Give yourself enough time to proofread and correct your paper.

Tenses
When describing methods and results, you should use the past tense.  The present tense is appropriate for accepted facts, such as the background information presented in the Introduction.  In addition, you may use the present tense when you discuss your results and conclusions.  Looking over other scientific papers may help you answer questions you might have on this topic.

Units
All units of measure must be metric or SI (international System).

Writing the Statement of Purpose

The purpose of the personal statement is to convince the Admissions Committee members that you belong at their school and, eventually, in their profession.

Things to Keep in Mind:
1. What the admissions committee will read between the lines: motivation, competence, potential as a graduate student.
2. Emphasize everything from a positive perspective and write in an active, not a passive, voice.
3. Demonstrate everything by example; don't say directly that you're a persistent person, demonstrate it.
4. You don't want to make excuses, but you can talk about the mistakes you've made as a learning experience.
5. If there is something important that happened (poverty, illness, excessive work, etc.), which affected your grades go ahead and state it, but write it affirmatively, that is, in a way that shows your perseverance.
6. Make sure everything is linked with continuity and focus.
7. The essay should be 500-600 words (1 to 1½ pages) single-space, typed, 12pt. font size.

Do's and Don'ts

Do's:
• Do start early and allow plenty of time for several drafts and multiple revisions.
• Do choose one theme/thesis that unifies your essay.
• Do think about your values and motivation before writing the essay.
• Do be as specific as possible about why you want to study for and join your chosen this profession.
• Do use the word "I" if you want to, but don't if it makes you uncomfortable.
• Do talk about how your uniqueness makes you a good candidate.
• Do use examples of personal struggle to highlight character traits or accomplishments.
• Do provide the reader with insight into what drives you.
• Do evaluate your experiences, rather than simply recounting them
• Do write in your own voice. Be yourself rather than trying to be the ideal applicant.
• Do think about the impression you are making on the reader.
• Do use active verbs. It is good to sound confident (without sounding obnoxious or pretentious).
• Do use a spell checker. Schools detest misspelled words and bad grammar.
• Do enlist others to read and proofread your essay.
• Do get feedback on your draft(s) from your advisor before your submission.
• Do take your essay to the Writing Center before you submit it to schools.

Don'ts:
• Don't use the word "dream."
• Don't write an expanded resume; avoid repeating information that you've provided elsewhere in your application.
• Don't lie, cheat or steal. Embellishing your personal stories to make them try to sound "better," having your friend the English major write your essay for you, or "borrowing" ideas from other essays you've read are obviously bad ideas. You want this to be your own work, and something you'll be able to talk about at your interviewsin an honest and detailed manner.
• Don't try to cover too much.
• Don't talk about emotionally-charged experiences if you cannot do so in a fairly professional manner at an interview.
• Don't use clichés or tired metaphors ("It was a dark and stormy night…")
• Don't talk about how bad all current health professionals are and how much better you will be.
• Don't mention "hot topics" like abortion, managed care, or assisted suicide.
• Don't talk about salary and how much money you would like to make.
• Don't talk about how wonderful you are. Let the Board take care of that.
• Don't list the qualities that you believe make you a good candidate. Rather, it should be selfevident from the essay what positive character traits you gained from your experiences.
• Don't say that you want to be a doctor because your mother/father is a doctor.

Balasinor: Dino tourism in India’s Jurassic park

A tiny town called Balasinor in Gujarat is home to the one of the largest dinosaur fossils sites in the world.

There's a fossilized dinosaur nesting ground and a prehistoric burial ground, but you don't know about it because no one is bothering to set it up as a UNESCO Geo Park.

According to the Geological Survey of India's Director of Palaeontology, D N Mohabey, the Gujarat Tourism Department and Gujarat Ecology Commission showed no interest in providing details on the site for a recommendation to UNESCO to set up a park around it.


“I met members of the Gujarat Ecology Commission, Gujarat Ecological Education and Research (GEER) and the Tourism Department for giving me the necessary data on the various areas including Ravioli in Balasinor taluka, where unique dinosaur fossil beds exist. But they made me run from pillar to post,” Mohabey told the Indian Express newspaper.

Paleontologists believe that at least seven species of dinosaur lived here and researchers have uncovered fossils of about 10,000 dinosaur eggs, making Raiyoli the third largest hatchery in the world.

In 2003 they also discovered a new species here, which belonged to the Tyrannosaurus Rex family. It was given the name Rajasaurus narmandensis, meaning princely reptile from the Narmada.

The site was discovered accidentally in 1981 when geologists were conducting a mineral survey of the area. Since then, the finds have attracted scientists and tourists from around the world, triggering off what the Gujarat state calls "dinosaur tourism."

The Dinosaur Princess

Aaliya Sultana Babi, the former princess of Balasinor, is an enthusiastic promoter and protector of the dinosaur legacy. Known as the Dinosaur Princess, she conducts tours to the site (contact details below).

Sultana Babi is the only English-speaking guide around and has an expert's knowledge of all the fossils.

At the site you can see part of a limb embedded in a rock, supposed fossilized remains of skin and other bones, fossilized egg rings and even a real dinosaur egg fossil.

It is the only site in the world where tourists can actually touch the dinosaur remains, and hold a 65 million year old egg fossil in their hands.

The ignored wealth

Unfortunately, the state of Gujarat has not shown much interest in developing the site as a mega tourist attraction.

It has taken five years to build a museum next to the site, which has still not been completed.

The site feels abandoned, with only one watchman protecting the site from villagers and grazing cattle.

It is a pity to see such neglect, as Gujarat is one of the few states in India with such a wealth of fossilized dinosaur remains.

The fossils were discovered two decades ago, yet they have not received due importance from state officials and most Indians do not even know of the existence of the site.

Where to stay

Balasinor is about one and a half hours drive from Ahmedabad. While visiting, tourists can stay in the Garden Palace, a heritage hotel property run by the former rulers of Balasinor, the Babi family. In fact this was their royal family home.

The palace has eight rooms, each one done up in a different color scheme, furniture and decor. If you feel like roughing it out, you can even stay in Camp Dinosaur tents on site.

Secret of success: Get the mind-set of an ant!

Sometimes the biggest lessons in life come from the smallest folks around us.


All of us tend to look up to big people for lessons on how to get better. We are keen to learn the secrets of their success. But we forget that sometimes the biggest lessons in life come from the smallest folks around us. Now that’s a good lesson to remember!


Take ants for instance. Would you believe those small creatures can teach us how to live a better life? Jim Rohn - the great motivational guru – developed what he called the ‘Ants Philosophy’.

He identified four key lessons from the behaviour of ants that can help us lead better lives. Jim Rohn is no more – but his messages continue to inspire. Here then, are the four lessons from Rohn’s ‘Ants Philosophy’.

1. Ants never quit. Have you noticed how ants always look for a way around an obstacle? Put your finger in an ant’s path and it will try and go around it, or over it. It will keep looking for a way out. It won’t just stand there and stare. It won’t give up and go back.

We should all learn to be like that. There will always be obstacles in our lives. The challenge is to keep trying, keep looking for alternative routes to get to our goals. Winston Churchill probably paraphrased the ant’s mindset when he offered this priceless advice: “Never give up. Never, never give up!”

2. Ants think winter all summer. Remember the old story of the ant and the grasshopper? In the middle of summer, the ant was busy gathering food for the winter ahead – while the grasshopper was out having a good time. Ants know that summer - the good times – won’t last forever. Winters will come. That’s a good lesson to remember. When the going is good, don’t be so arrogant as to believe that a crisis or a setback cannot happen to you. Be good to other people. Save for a rainy day. Look ahead. And remember, good times may not last, but good people do.

3. Ants think summer all winter. As they suffer through the unbearable cold of the winter, ants keep reminding themselves that it won’t last forever, and that summer will soon be here. And with the first rays of the summer sun, the ants come out – ready to work, ready to play. When we are down and seemingly out, when we go through what looks like a never-ending crisis, it’s good to remind ourselves that this too shall pass. Good times will come. It’s important to retain a positive attitude, an attitude that says things will get better. As the old saying goes, tough times don’t last. Tough people do.

4. Ants do all they possibly can. How much food does an ant gather in summer? All that it possibly can! Now that’s a great work ethic to have. Do all you can! One ant doesn’t worry about how much food another ant is collecting. It does not sit back and wonder why it should have to work so hard. Nor does it complain about the poor pay! Ants just do their bit. They gather all the food they can. Success and happiness are usually the result of giving 100% - doing all you possibly can. If you look around you, you’ll find that successful people are those who just do all they possibly can.

Follow the four simple steps of Jim Rohn’s ‘Ant Philosophy’ – and you’ll see the difference. Don’t quit. Look ahead. Stay positive. And do all you can.

And there’s just one more lesson to learn from ants. Did you know that an ant can carry objects up to 20 times their own weight? Maybe we are like that too. We can carry burdens on our shoulders and manage workloads that are far, far heavier than we’d imagine. Next time something’s bothering you and weighing you down, and you feel you just can’t carry on, don’t fret. Think of the little ant. And remember, you too can carry a lot more on your shoulders!

"Fake Marijuana" Now Illegal

The U.S. Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) today exercised its emergency scheduling authority to control five chemicals used to make faux-marijuana products. Except as authorized by law, this action makes possessing and selling these chemicals, or the products that contain them, illegal. Over the past few years these "fake pot" products have become popular because they have been marketed as legal substances that produce a marijuana-like high. However, since 2009 the DEA has received an increasing number of reports from across the country detailing the potential dangers of these flavored chemical-laced herbs. The use of these products, such as "Spice," "Blaze," "K-2," and "Red X Dawn," can cause serious side effects including convulsions, anxiety attacks, dangerously elevated heart rates, increased blood pressure, vomiting, and disorientation. Today's temporary scheduling action will remain in effect for at least one year while the DEA and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services investigate these products to see if a permanent ban is necessary.

What is rotavirus?

Q: What is rotavirus?

A: Rotavirus is the most common cause of childhood diarrhea in the world. In fact, by the age of 5 nearly every child will have had a rotavirus infection. It can cause mild to severe diarrhea (gastroenteritis) in children, and usually milder diarrhea amongst adults. Rotavirus is transmitted via the fecal-oral route, meaning that the virus particle has to be ingested in order for the person to become infected. This can be through contaminated water sources, food supply, unsanitary eating conditions, etc. In general, good hygiene – especially frequent and thorough hand washing – is the best line of defense from infection. When a child develops severe diarrhea, the diagnosis of rotavirus infection is made based on the history of the illness. Sometimes, a stool sample is collected for analysis. There is no specific treatment for rotavirus aside from prevention of dehydration with electrolyte drinks. However, a rotavirus vaccine is available and is usually given to children in three sequential doses at the ages of 2 months, 4 months, and 6 months.

1. CSIR will hold the Joint CSIR-UGC Test on 19th June, 2011 for determining the eligibility of the Indian National candidates for the award of Junior Research Fellowships (JRF) NET and for determining eligibility for appointment of Lecturers (NET) in certain subject areas falling under the faculty of Science. The award of Junior Research Fellowship (NET) to the successful eligible candidates will depend on their finding admission/placement in a university/ national laboratory/ institution of higher learning and research, as applicable.

1.1 A candidate may apply either for ‘JRF + Lectureship’ both or for ‘Lectureship (LS) only’ He/she may indicate his/her preference in the O.M.R Application Form/Online Application, as the case may be. CSIR may consider candidates applying for ‘JRF + LS’ for ‘Lectureship only” depending on number of fellowships available& performance in the test subject to the condition that they fulfill the laid down eligibility criterion . If a candidate is found to be over-age for JRF (NET) he/she will automatically be considered for Lectureship (NET) only.

1.2 Two separate merit lists, one comprising the candidates qualifying for the award of Junior Research Fellowship (JRF – NET) and the second, of those candidates qualifying the Eligibility Test for Lectureship (NET), will be made on the basis of their performance in the above Test. Candidates qualifying for the award of JRF (NET) will receive fellowship either from CSIR or UGC as per their assignment or from the Schemes with which they may find association. The candidates declared eligible for Junior Research Fellowship under UGC scheme will be governed by UGC rules/regulations in this regard.

1.3 The final result of this Single MCQ test may be declared sometime in the month of August, 2011 and fellowship to successful candidates could be awarded from 01.01. 2012.

2.1 SUBJECTS OF THE TEST for CSIR JRF June 2011

The Test will be held in the subjects as given under:

4. Mathematical Sciences
5. Physical Sciences

2.2 EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATION for CSIR JRF June 2011

M.Sc. or Equivalent degree under the subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above, with minimum 55% marks for General & OBC candidates; 50% for SC/ST candidates, Physically and Visually Handicapped candidates and Ph.D. degree holders who had passed Master’s degree prior to 19th September 1991.

A candidate can also apply for the Test under RA (Result Awaited) category, if he/she is appearing or has appeared in his/her final year (Last Semester where Semester system is there) of M.Sc. OR equivalent Degree Examination in subjects mentioned in para 2.1 above during the academic Session 2010-2011. Such candidates will have to submit the attestation format (given at the reverse of the application form) duly certified by the Head of the Deptt./Institute over his/her signature and rubber stamp (with address and name) from where the candidate is appearing or has appeared in the final year(Last Semester where Semester system is there) M.Sc. or equivalent degree examination. However, such candidates shall be admitted to the Test provisionally. They shall only be considered eligible for JRF-(NET)/LS-(NET), if they are able to produce the proof of having passed the

Master’s Degree examination in the relevant or related subject with the requisite percentage of marks and within the stipulated time frame.

2.3 AGE LIMIT& RELAXATION

For JRF (NET): Minimum 19 Years and maximum 28 years as on 01-01-2011 (upper age limit may be relaxed up to 5 years as in case of candidates belonging to SC/ST/OBC(Non Creamy Layer), Physically handicapped/Visually handicapped and female applicants).
For LS (NET): Minimum 19 years, as on 01.01.2011. No upper age limit.

3. DATE AND SCHEME OF THE TEST for CSIR JRF June 2011

3.1.1 The MCQ Test paper will be held in one session on Sunday, the 19th June 2011. The scheme of Examination is as under:

To enable the candidates to go through the questions, the question paper booklet shall be distributed 15 minutes before the scheduled time of the exam. The Answer sheet shall be distributed at the scheduled time of the exam.

The Test Booklet for this test will be printed in Hindi & English Version separately. The candidate opting for Hindi medium in Column No. 5 of Application Form, will be supplied Question Booklet/Test Booklet printed in Hindi Version only and Candidate opting for English medium, will be supplied Question Booklet/Test Booklet printed in English Version only. The candidate will be required to answer as per option exercised in Column No.5 of application Form.

3.2 SYLLABUS OF THE TEST

The question paper shall be divided into three parts, (A,B & C) as per syllabus & Scheme of Exam.

# Part ‘A’ shall be common to all subjects. This part shall contain questions pertaining to General Science, Quantitative Reasoning & Analysis and Research Aptitude.
# Part ‘B’ shall contain subject-related conventional Multiple Choice questions (MCQs), generally covering the topics given in the syllabus.
# Part ‘C’ shall contain higher value questions that may test the candidate’s knowledge of scientific concepts and/or application of the scientific concepts. The questions shall be of analytical nature where a candidate is expected to apply the scientific knowledge to arrive at the solution to the given scientific problem.
# A negative marking for wrong answers, wherever required, shall be applicable as per scheme of Exam.

4. EXAMINATION CENTRES for CSIR JRF June 2011

The test will be held at 26 Centres spread all over India, as specified below:

Bangalore, Bhavnagar, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Chandigarh, Chennai, Cochin, Delhi, Guntur, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Imphal, Jammu, Jamshedpur, Karaikudi, Kolkata, Lucknow, Nagpur, Pilani, Pune, Raipur Roorkee, Srinagar, Thiruvananthapuram, Udaipur and Varanasi.

A candidate may opt for any of the above centres. No request for change of centre would ordinarily be granted. However, a request in writing for change of Centre may be entertained on merits, if received in this unit latest by 18.04.2011. If sufficient number of candidates do not opt for any of the above Centres, that particular Centre may stand deleted from the above list OR otherwise also, the concerned candidates may be allotted another Centre nearest to their place of residence, at the discretion of CSIR. No TA/DA will be admissible to any candidate for attending the test, in any circumstances.

5. HOW TO APPLY for CSIR JRF June 2011

5.1. OPTION-I : APPLY THROUGH „INFORMATION BULLETIN?:

5.1.1. BY HAND:

Candidates applying for the Test may obtain the Information Bulletin and Application forms (inclusive of fee payable) through the branches of the Bank notified below in para 5.4 (within the prescribed dates) by paying the following fee in cash:

5.1.2. BY POST:

The information Bulletin and Application form may also be obtained through Value Payable Post(V.P.P.) from the Indian Bank, 3/1, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi – 110 008, by sending a crossed Demand draft for Rs. 400/-, Rs. 200/- or Rs.100/-(as the case may be) drawn in favour of “Indian Bank, West Patel Nagar, New Delhi” payable at New Delhi. For this purpose, the candidate should send a request to the Bank with TWO self-addressed slips clearly mentioning the address at which he/she desires the Information Bulletin & Application Form to be sent by Value Payable Post (V.P.P.) As above mentioned Bank will entertain the request for forms through post from Tuesday, the 1st March, 2011 to Wednesday, the 23rd March, 2011 only, hence, candidates are advised to send well in advance so as to reach their request within the above said period. The candidate should write his/her name, Date Of Birth, address, date of Examination (19.06.2011) and subject code on the back of the Demand Draft so that it can be located easily, if it gets detached accidentally from the letter of request for supply of Information Bulletin. However, before attaching the draft with letter of request, the candidates should check that it bears the code number of the issuing bank and drawee bank and also amount and signatures of issuing authority.

5.2. OPTION-II : APPLY THROUGH ONLINE APPLICATION:

Interested & eligible candidates may apply for this test Online through a link available at CSIR, HRDG website: www.csirhrdg.res.in. In order to apply Online the candidates are required to download Bank challan Performa from the above website and then deposit the requisite examination fee in any of the Indian Bank branches throughout the country. The examination fee for the Online application is same as mentioned in Para-5.1.1 above. Candidates after successfully submitting application online are required to take print out of the Application Form, paste his/her recent black & white photograph, put his/her signature at the required space, attach requisite certificates and send alongwith CSIR marked copy of fee deposited Bank Challan in an envelope to Sr. Controller of Examinations, Human Resource Development Group, Examination Unit, CSIR Complex, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi-110012 so as to reach on or before 05.04.2011 (12.04.2011 for remote areas).

Online applications without hard copy or bank challan receipt or incomplete in any respect will be summarily rejected. Before applying Online, candidates are advised to go through detailed notification available at CSIR, HRDG website.

Examination fee paid along with the Information Bulletin or through Bank Challan for a particular examination will neither be adjusted for any subsequent examination nor refunded under any circumstances.Candidates should also check all the columns of Bank Challan, online application, which are to be filled in properly to avoid cancellation of application, Please note that Fee submitted by any other mode like money order, demand draft, IPO etc. will be summarily rejected.

5.3. CANDIDATE SEEKING FEE CONCESSION

The candidate should attach an attested copy of his/her category certificate as a proof of his/her claim. An application form (either through Bank or online), claiming any concession in fee & education qualification but without an attested copy of a valid SC/ST/OBC(Non Creamy Layer)/PH/VHcertificate from a competent authority and in prescribed format, will be summarily rejected.

Candidate must note that CSIR follows only Central Govt. lists and not state Govt. lists. Similarly, candidate applying under physically handicapped (PH)/ visually handicapped (VH) category may note that Govt. of India rules will be applicable in this regard.

7. THE LAST DATE FOR SUBMISSION OF APPLICATION FORM for CSIR JRF June 2011:

The application form (through Bank or online), duly completed with requisite enclosures should be sent Under Certificate of Posting (U.P.C) to the Sr. Controller of Examinations, Examination Unit, Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, Opposite Institute of Hotel Management, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi 110012 so as to reach Examination Unit CSIR on or before 05.04.2011.

For candidates applying from Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland, Tripura, Sikkim, Ladakh Division of J&K State, Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Lakshdweep, the application form must reach the Sr.Controller of Examination CSIR on or before 12.04.2011.

The candidates are advised in their own interest to apply early enough to ensure timely receipt of their applications by the Examination Unit on or before the closing date.

APPLICATION FORM RECEIVED AFTER CLOSING DATE WILL BE SUMMERILY REJECTED.

9. OTHER GENERAL INFORMATION:

(i) The candidates are advised to go through this notification and also terms & conditions given in Information Bulletin for this test. The candidate must satisfy themselves regarding their eligibility for this test before applying for this test.
(ii) Candidates must read the terms and conditions for CSIR /UGC Research Fellowships on the respective websites.
(iii) Candidates applying through O.M.R. Application form must use only the form supplied with Information Bulletin and purchased from any of the designated branches of the Bank listed in para 5.4 above. They should ensure that while selling the form,the bank has authenticated the form at reverse of the application form in space provided for this purpose. Application Form should be purchased from designated branches only and not from any other agency.
(iv) Candidates should follow the instruction for filling the O.M.R. Application. The duly completed application form must be sent under U.P.C. and apply early enough to ensure timely receipt of their applications by the Examination Unit on or before the closing date. The Certificate of Postage? (proof of dispatch) may be preserved as acknowledgement.
(v) Candidate desirous of applying Online for this test will be required to deposit fee through Bank challan in any branch of Indian Bank and then apply at CSIR, HRDG website. After successfully submitting the application, candidates are required to take a printout on A4 size paper, affix photograph at designated space & sign across it, get it endorsed by the HOD (for RA category only) and send it alongwith copy of Bank challan and other requisite enclosures, if any.
(vi) Candidates applying through Online application must note that mode of payment of fee is Bank challan from Indian Bank only. Fee submitted through any other mode viz.IPO,/demand draft/money order/ CRF stamp etc will not be accepted.

8. IMPORTANT POINTS for CSIR JRF June 2011:

1. While applying for this test, please ensure that you fulfill all the eligibility conditions and follow all the laid down procedures/guidelines for this test.
2. Purchase the Information Bulletin from the designated Bank branches early enough to avoid any last minute rush.
3. While applying Online, apply early enough to avoid any last minute rush
4. Ensure that completed application Hard Copy (in case of Online application) must reach to this office within stipulated last date for receipt.
5. List of candidates registered for this will be made available on our website tentatively on 17th May, 2011. The candidates must refer to our website for checking their registration in time & for having update from time to time.
6. Admission Certificates to all the registered candidates will be dispatched three weeks before the test, if any candidate does not receive the same by 13th June, 2011, he/she must download duplicate Admission Certificate from our website. CSIR will not be responsible for any delay/non-receipt of the Admission certificate. 7. The Test Booklet for this test will be printed in Hindi & English Version separately. The candidate opting for Hindi medium in Column No. 5 of Application Form, will be supplied Question Booklet/Test Booklet printed in Hindi Version only and Candidate opting for English medium, will be supplied Question Booklet/Test Booklet printed in English Version only. The candidate will be required to answer as per option exercised in Column No.5 of application Form. 8. For applying under “RA” category, the candidate should either has appeared or is appearing in Final year (Last Semester, where semester is there) of M.Sc. or equivalent Degree Examination during the Session 2010-1011.

Incomplete application or application submitted in any other format will be summarily rejected and no correspondence will be entertained in this regard.

(vii) The eligible candidates, in their own interest, are advised to keep Certificate of Postage and photocopy of both sides of the completed Application Form and three identical copies of the passport size photographs which has been affixed on the Application Form.
(viii) Candidates willing to apply through online application should see detailed notification and Instruction for applying online at our website www.csirhrdg.res.in and apply early enough to avoid any last minute rush.
(ix) Candidates should ensure that the signatures appended by them in all the places viz. In their application form,
Attendance Sheet etc. and in all the correspondence with the CSIR, should be identical and there should be no variation of any kind.
(x) Any change in address of correspondence should be promptly brought to the notice of Examination Unit within the prescribed period i.e. by 18.04.2011.
(xi) The Center and date of the Test are liable to be changed at the discretion of CSIR. No TA/DA will be paid to the
candidates by the CSIR.
(xii) Candidates should note that their candidature is strictly provisional till their joining. No candidate will be admitted to the Test unless he/she holds the admission Certificate to the Test. The mere fact that an Admission Certificate has been issued to a candidate will not imply that the Council has finally accepted his/her
candidature.
(xiii) The candidate may please note that candidates declared successful will be required to submit a copy of their Admit Card, matriculation certificate/mark sheet, M.Sc. or its equivalent degree certificate/mark sheet to Sr. Controller of Examinations, Examination Unit, Human Resource Development Group, CSIR Complex, Opposite Institute of Hotel Management, Library Avenue, Pusa, New Delhi 110012. No separate intimation letter will be issued to successful candidate.
(xiv) Candidates may note that the verification of essential eligibility conditions of a candidate with reference to the documents as may be called for, will be taken up only by the Lecturer appointing/JRF awarding authorities after the candidate has qualified in the Test. The candidate should note that their candidature is strictly provisional till their joining.
(xv) Candidates may please note that all communications to CSIR should invariably contain the following particulars, failing which no response is possible:

(xvi) In all matters the decision of the CSIR as to the eligibility or otherwise of a candidate for admission to the
Test or his/her subsequent qualifying in the Test shall be final.
(xvii) Any attempt on the part of a candidate to obtain support for his / her candidature by any means may disqualify him/her
for admission to the examination.
(xviii) A candidate who is found of guilty of impersonation or of submitting fabricated documents or documents which have been tampered with or of making statements which are incorrect or false or of suppressing material information or otherwise resorting to any other irregular or improper means for obtaining admission to the examination, or of using or attempting to use unfair means or of misbehavior in the examination hall, may, in addition to rendering himself liable to criminal prosecution:
(a) Be debarred by the CSIR from this test and future tests also.
(b) Will be liable to disciplinary action under the appropriate rules, if he/she is already in service under Government/Autonomous Bodies/UGC/CSIR.
(xix) All disputes pertaining to the NET Examination shall fall within the jurisdiction of Delhi only.
(xx) CSIR will not be responsible for any printing error in this Advertisement.
